In this conversation moderated by exhibition curator Dr Martha Liew, Johnson Chang and Karen Smith will unpack stories of the development of Chinese contemporary art on the international art circuit. Chinese contemporary art emerged on the international art scene in the early 1990s. The movement was developed and evolved based on political, economic, cultural and social circumstances. While existing literature tends to focus on its development within China from an institutional point of view, this panel discussion will specifically focus on how the movement was developed inside and outside of China from historical and non-institutional perspectives.
